Commercialization of University Science and Technology

Governments and society increasingly ask research universities to justify (at least in part) the public financial support of their research in terms of tangible outcomes:  commercial technologies, jobs, generation of wealth, solutions to problems in health, national security or sustainability, and so on. Students also ask if what they are learning is actually preparing them for a job, and more generally if there will be jobs, and if so, of what nature?  Regardless of the correctness (and according to what metrics?) of these requests, there is another, different but associated, operational question:  “Can universities commercialize the science and technology they generate?” That is, is it even possible for a university to develop a significant commercial technology?    The answers to these questions are more complicated than they might seem.  This talk will outline some of the issues, with illustrations.
